Nana and Poppy visit...and a camera test

Nana and Poppy are here visiting and the kids are soooo happy to see them. I really need to be taking more pictures of everything, but I did happen to grab this shot this morning. :)

Now a brief confession (Warning: if you are not one of my "nerd friends" this will probably bore you). I have been questioning the perfomance of my new camera body (7D) and/or my abilities as a photographer since getting it. I have noticed noise in a lot of shots that I didn't feel should have any, and sometimes shots that just aren't as crisp or clear as I feel like I was getting with my little ole rebel right before the 7D came. The good news is that I think I am coming to the conclusion that the cause is a couple of things: 1) I am still getting used to this new camera. Even though a lot of things are different from my old one, I think there are a lot of things that, although they feel comfortable, will take time to get totally used to. One of those being not raising the ISO super high just because it goes that high. 2) I think the biggest issue is unrealistic expectations. I guess I figured that I could take photos at an ISO of 2000 without ANY noise. I don't know why I expected that. My rebel didn't even have the capability to go that high and actually most of my photos over 400 were so noisy they were barely keepers. Both of today's photos were taken at an ISO of 2000. The first one because I wanted to capture the moment and didn't want to waste time getting my speedlite on and set and the second one was strictly to test the ISO/noise. I actually took about 5 or 6 shots of her in a row, increasing the ISO (and adjusting everything else accordingly to keep the exposure correct)to compare. Now, when you zoom in much on these (especially the first one) you will see considerable noise, but the ability to grab my camera and capture this moment quickly using only the available natural light is something I should be grateful for.
